Dates for Filing vs Final Action: Can You File Your I-485 Yet?

Every month the Visa Bulletin publishes two charts, and they answer two different questions. Mixing them up is one of the most common green card mistakes.

Final Action Dates (Chart A) = when you can be approved

This is the cutoff our estimator uses. A green card can only be approved once the Final Action Date passes your priority date.

Dates for Filing (Chart B) = when you may be able to file early

The Dates for Filing chart is usually ahead of the Final Action chart. When you may use it, you can submit your I-485 (adjustment of status) before your green card is actually available, which can unlock an EAD work permit and advance parole travel document while you wait.

The catch: USCIS decides which chart applies

Each month USCIS announces whether adjustment-of-status applicants may use the Dates for Filing chart or must use the Final Action chart. So even if Chart B looks favorable, check USCIS's monthly "Adjustment of Status Filing Charts" page before filing.
